Hal Watt's great strength lies in the care with which he organizes his paintings. Using the glazing technique, he allows his colors to flow across the canvas creating the cool shimmering and transparent colors with extraordinary depth and appeal. Though he prepares many sketches before painting, his work takes on a certain spontaneity once his decision is made. Born in 1925, Hal was raised in Los Angeles and received his art education at the Jepsen Art Institute. He later attended the Art Center School of Los Angeles. After serving as a nose gunner on the Jolly Roger Bomber Group, he spent two years in Alaska before returning to Los Angeles in 1947. For a number of years he painted for MGM and Columbia Studios and worked as a freelance illustrator. In 1960 he devoted all of his time to painting and for over two decades became noted for his ability to paint strikingly beautiful women and children. His immensely popular paintings of period costume subjects are included in several private collections.
