Ramon Kelley was born in the Spanish barrio of Cheyenne, Wyoming, as the nation was recovering from the Depression. He dropped out of school after grade eight to make a living shining shoes, selling papers, working in a used-car dealership and learning to be a ranch hand. He eventually decided on a career in the Navy. The experience of coming to know Europe's great museums and art collections while in the Navy was decisive for him. After four years of military service, Kelley realized that his childhood interest in drawing was a curious characteristic of his personality and one which needed direction. He enrolled in the Colorado Institute of Art and began searching for experience in the field of commercial arts. He began to perfect his skills and to amass a body of work. In 1965, his luck and perseverance led him to a gallery in Taos, New Mexico, which agreed to show his work. Kelley now is among the most recognized and collected artists in the U.S. He works in watercolor, pastel, acrylic, oil paint and charcoal.
