Born in Chicago in 1958, Tom Fricker showed his creativity early and always knew that he wanted to become an artist. Inspired by artists like N.C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell, he made the decision to pursue a career as an illustrator. Disappointed with the approach to art education in the university system, Tom enrolled at the Harris School of Advertising Art in Franklin, Tennessee, in 1976. He met, Lisa, his future wife there, and together they transferred to Paier College of Art in Hamden, Connecticut. He received his diploma in 1980 and was voted by the faculty as the most outstanding illustration student in his class, the first unanimous vote in school history. Although recruited by Hallmark Cards, Tom decided to take his portfolio to New York and was soon producing illustrations for clients like St. Martin's Press and Reader's Digest. In 1983, Tom and his wife, Lisa, left Connecticut to return to Tom's hometown of Huntsville, Alabama, where he joined the staff of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center as a designer.
